Convicted Drunk Driver Who Killed Pedestrian Sentenced to 25 Years to Life

District Attorney Jan Scully announced today that the Honorable Patrick Marlette sentenced Paul William Walden to 25-years to life in prison.


On May 13, 2014, a jury convicted Walden of second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter, felony hit and run, and felony driving under the influence due to three prior convictions for driving under the influence.

On July 16, 2012, 23-year-old Gemily West and her boyfriend, 21-year-old Harison Long- Randall, were walking their four dogs when they were struck down in a crosswalk by a hit-andrun driver. Harison lost part of a leg in the crash and died two weeks later from his injuries. He is credited with stepping in front of Gemily to protect her and push her out of the path of the car. Gemily suffered a broken leg and is still recovering from her injuries. Their four dogs – Bindie, Evie, Winry and Zury – were all killed at the scene.

On July 19, 2012, Paul William Walden was arrested. Police reports state Walden's car was traveling down the two-lane residential street in Carmichaelat an estimated 80 mph when he hit the victims. He never stopped or slowed down and fled the scene.

This case was prosecuted by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s DUI Vertical Prosecution team, funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Elk Grove Woman Allegedly Uses Golf Clubs in Domestic Violence Incident

An Elk Grove woman was arrested yesterday afternoon after she allegedly attacked her victim with a golf club.
According to Elk Grove Police, 19-year old Amanda Caldera was involved in a verbal argument with her victim that escalated into a physical altercation. During the altercation, Caldera allegedly struck the victim with a golf club, swung a knife and scratched the victim in the head and shoulder resulting in visible injuries.

Responding officers located the suspect at another location and arrested her. Caldera remains in custody at the county jail on a $50,000 bail.  

Sacramento Man Sentenced to 30 Years in Child Porn Case

Phillip J. Colwell, 54, of Sacramento, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Troy L. Nunley to 30 years in prison for producing child pornography, transmitting obscene matter to a minor, and using a cellphone to entice a minor to engage in unlawful sexual conduct, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

Colwell pleaded guilty in April 2012. According to the guilty plea, Colwell engaged in a series of cellphone text conversations with a 14-year-old Sacramento boy to whom he sent sexually explicit images and with whom he sought to engage in sexual conduct. Colwell encouraged him to produce sexually explicit images of himself to send to Colwell. In July 2011, Colwell engaged in sex acts with a 16-year-old Sacramento boy, and took sexually explicit photos of him. Colwell then uploaded the photos to a website in order to promote the commercial sex trafficking of the boy.
In sentencing Colwell to 30 years, Judge Nunley stated “You are a predator. You prey on young boys.”
This case was the product of an investigation by the FBI’s Sacramento-based Innocence Lost Task Force, the Sacramento Police Department, and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s office. Assistant United States Attorney Matthew G. Morris prosecuted the case.
“Our agents and fellow Innocence Lost Task Force members bravely face the challenge of identifying and investigating individuals who seek to exploit a child’s innocence. In this case, Colwell used a mobile phone and the Internet to lure and exploit children,” said Special Agent in Charge Monica M. Miller of the Sacramento division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. “Colwell’s sentencing is an opportunity to remind all parents and guardians to monitor the text and online activity of each child and to reach out to law enforcement for help immediately if predatory activity is discovered or suspected."

Three Elk Grove Juvenile Arrested for Slashing Tires, Vandalizing Cars

Three Elk Grove boys were arrested by police early Sunday night after an alleged car vandalism spree.

According to Elk Grove Police, the 11,12 and 13-year old boys were letting air out of car tires and throwing items at parked cars in the vicinity of the 3000 block of Riparian Drive. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found the boys and found the 13-year old in possession of a knife. 

Officers searched the area and located five vehicles that had their vehicle tires slashed. A witness positively identified the 11 and 13-year old S-1 as being the suspects for vandalizing one vehicle. 

Multiple witnesses were contacted and reported seeing the three suspects near each of the damaged vehicles. The suspects were taken into custody then transported to juvenile hall. 

Elk Grove Police Arrest 16-year Old on Suspicion of Burglary

A 16-year old male was arrested Saturday night after he allegedly burglarized a house in Elk Grove.


According to Elk Grove Police, officers were dispatched to the 5300 block of Meadow Way regarding an in-progress residential burglary. Witnesses saw the suspect fleeing the residence on foot and officers were able to locate and detain him.

The witness positively identified the juvenile as the person fleeing th house. The suspect was taken into custody then transported to juvenile hall. 

Elk Grove Police Make Arrests in Two Separate Domestic Violence Incidents

Elk Grove Police arrested suspects in two separate domestic violence incidents yesterday.

According to police reports, 43-year old Shawn Moppin of Elk Grove was involved in an argument that escalated into a physical altercation. During the altercation, Moppin allegedly knocked a phone out of victim's hands then choked, twisted the victim's hand and slapped the face.

The alleged attacked continued when the suspect the choked the victim a second time. Moppin then fled the residence on foot before officers arrived.

The victim suffered visible injuries and was transported to a local area hospital. Officers later located Moppin a short distance away from the residence and was arrested. He remains in custody at the county jail on a $50,000 bail.

In the second incident, police arrested 39-year old Yeu Melissa Lo of Elk Grove after she allegedly ripper her victim's shirt and poked him in the eye resulting in a visible injury. Lo was arrested and booked into the county jail and has been released on bail.

Elk Grove Police Arrests Three For Public Intoxication

On Tuesday, Elk Grove Police arrested three people on suspicion of public intoxication.


The arrested included 22-year old Jorge Arrendo of Elk Grove, 25-year old Vincent Rossi of Sacramento and 27-year old Lakeisha Johnson of Elk Grove. Johnson also was found to be violating terms or her probation when arrested. 




 

Elk Grove Police Pick-up Three Suspects With Active Warrants

Three suspects with active warrants were arrested by Elk Grove Police yesterday.


According to Elk Grove Police, three suspects with active warrants were arrested and booking into the county jail yesterday.

The suspects include:
22-year old Dominque Luck Gilmore of Sacramento was arrested on the 6100 block of 48th Avenue in Sacramento. Gilmore is being held and is ineligible for bail.

19-year old Tyler Heath of Galt was arrested on Calvine and Power Inn roads. Heath is being held on $30,500 bail.

23-year old  Gabriel Zoe of Elk Grove was arrested in Sacramento on Delvin Way and Vintage Park Drive. Gabriel has been released on bail.





Elk Grove Police Arrest Senior Citizen Probie For Suspected Shoplifting

Elk Grove Police arrested a 67-year old man Friday afternoon on suspicion of shoplifting.


According to police reports, Matei Lusca of Moreno Valley, Calif. was detained by by loss prevention officers at the Elk Grove Boulevard Walmart after he was observed shoplifting. The suspect was arrested and taken to the county jail where he remains in custody for violation of terms of parole and $155,000 bail 



Elk Grove Police Bust Another Pot Growing Operation

Elk Grove Police arrested three suspects yesterday morning on suspicion of operating an illegal pot growing operation. 


According to police reports, 47-year old Hui Jang, 22-year old Jing Jiang and 43-year old Mei Wu, all off Elk Grove were arrested on the 9000 block of New Classic Court. All three are being held at the county jail and are not eligible for bail. 



Elk Grove Man Arrested on Suspicion of Passing Phony Cash

An Elk Grove man was arrested last night after he allegedly tried to pass counterfeit money.


According to Elk Grove Police, 35-year old John Laqui of Elk Grove was arrested after he tried to pass a counterfeit $100 bill at the McDonald's on the 8200 block of Laguna Boulevard. Laqui was arrested and is being held at the county jail and is ineligible for bail.


Elk Grove Man Arrested After Allegedly Fighting Mother, Damaging Cop Car

An Elk Grove man was arrested Monday afternoon after a domestic violence incident.

According to Elk Grove Police, 22-year old Kyle Silvers was involved in an argument with his mother that escalated into an altercation. During the altercation, Silvers allegedly broke a mirror and pushed his mother to the ground resulting in a laceration to her hand.

When officers arrived, the mother placed her son under a citizens arrest. When Silvers was placed in the back of the patrol car after his arrest, he allegedly kicked-out the back window of the vehicle and injured his calf.

After treatment at an area hospital, Silvers was booked into the county jail and has been released on bail. 


Stockton Man Arrested on Marijuana Possession, Sales Charges by Elk Grove Police

A Stockton man was arrested Tuesday night on possession and sales of marijuana charges after he created a traffic hazard.
According to Elk Grove Police, 19-year old Ghanton Thornton was operating a vehicle that caused a traffic hazard at Laguna Boulvedard and LagunaSpring Drive. Thornton stopped his vehicle at the intersection without and headlights and when officers tried to conduct a vehcicle stop, he fled.

When he finally stopped, officers detained him and officers observed marijuana packaged for sales in plain view on the backseat and a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of three open containers of alcoholic beverages. Thornton was arrested then transported to the main jail.where he was subsequently released on bail.

Elk Grove Father Arrested After Alleged Attack on Son With Golf Club

An Elk Grove father was arrested yesterday afternoon after a domestic violence incident.

According the Elk Grove Police, 45-year old Jae Shin was involved in an argument with his 16-year old son that escalated into a physical confrontation. During the course of the confrontation, Shin allegedly struck his son with a golf club several times resulting in visible injuries.

Shin is currently in custody at the county jail, but is scheduled to be released sometime today.


Roseville-based Financial Advisor Gets 36 Months For Stealing From Clients

Michelle Lee Kern, 36, of Sacramento, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Morrison C. England Jr. to 46 months in prison and ordered to pay $642,625 in restitution for financial advisor fraud, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.
According to court documents, Kern worked as a licensed financial adviser at Ameriprise Financial Services Inc. in Roseville between 2009 and December 2012. While working as a financial advisor, Kern stole $642,625 from approximately 20 clients by making wire transfers from client accounts to Kern’s own bank accounts and credit cards. Kern also forged client signatures on checks. According to victim statements read in court, Kern’s theft made it difficult for some victims to retire, support disabled children, and pay for college.

“Kern abused her role as a trusted, licensed financial advisor to defraud her clients for personal gain. Her actions clearly demonstrated disregard for the perilous financial situation her clients ultimately faced when they became victims of the fraud,” said Special Agent in Charge Monica M. Miller of the Sacramento division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. “Investigation and prosecution of financial fraud is a top priority for the FBI, particularly such that is committed by those entrusted to safeguard funds.”

While awaiting sentencing in this case, Kern was charged in Placer County with embezzling from her church. That case is pending, and Kern is presumed innocent of those charges, unless and until proven guilty.

This case was the product of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Michael D. Anderson prosecuted the case.



Elk Grove Police 'Arrest Person of Interest' on Homicide Charges

Elk Grove Police announced the person of interest in the murder of an Elk Grove man, was arrested yesterday.


Arrested on suspicion of murdering 75-year old Xihao Huang was 21-year old Kyle Smith. The suspect was already in custody at the Sacramento County Jail for violation of parole.

Huang's body was found on the early afternoon of Thursday, July 25 in a field near Whitelock Parkway and Bellaterra Drive. The victim died after sustaining multiple stab wounds.

During the course of their investigation, Elk Grove Police identified Smith as a person of interest. He had been picked up that same day.

Smith remains in custody at the county jail and is ineligible for bail. He will be arraigned Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in Department 61.

Elk Grove Grocery Worker Injured Detaining Shoplifting Suspect

A suspected shoplifter injured an Elk Grove grocery store worker who was attempted to detain him.


According to Elk Grove Police, 36-year old Kevin Keil of Sacramento was observed shoplifting at the Winco store on Sheldon Road. When the suspect left the store without paying, a loss prevention employees attempted to detain him. 

The suspected resisted attempts to detain him, grabbed a folding knife from his pocket and threatened the employees. The employees were able to detain Keil after a brief struggle. The employees suffered minor injuries while trying to detain him. 

A records check revealed that Keil had an active felony warrant out for his arrest.The suspect was medically cleared for incarceration at a local area hospital then transported to the county jail where he is being held and is ineligible for bail.  

Former Rancho Cordova Bio-Tech Executive Pleads Guilty on Securities Fraud Charges

Matthew Sarad, 40, pleaded guilty today to securities fraud, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.
According to court documents, Sarad lived in Folsom and was the founder and chief executive officer of Rancho Cordova-based Telomolecular Corporation. It purported to be a biotechnology startup company and claimed to have developed nanoparticle technology that could eradicate cancer and treat other age-related diseases. Between November 2005 and July 2008, Sarad solicited investors nationwide, offering them stock in Telomolecular. In selling the Telomolecular stock, Sarad made untrue statements, such as telling investors that the company believed its cancer curing products would complete clinical trials, obtain requisite government approval, make it to the market in less than three years, and had a deep management team that had experience taking companies public. Sarad collected about $6.5 million from more than 300 investors..

In addition, according to court documents, between January 2009 and December 2009, Sarad owned Folsom-based Sun Nanosystems. It purported to install solar energy systems for residential and commercial customers. It claimed to have developed nanoparticle technology that vastly increased the efficiency of solar panels. In selling the solar panels, Sarad falsely told customers and prospective customers that Sun Nanosystems worked with state-of-the-art proprietary technology that could increase the efficiency of conventional solar panels by as much as 50 percent. He claimed that Sun Nanosystems had a great deal of experience installing solar panels and had satisfied past customers. Sarad collected approximately $300,000 from customers but failed to complete installation of any solar panels..

This case is the product of an extensive investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorneys Lee Bickley and Chris Hales and Special Assistant United States Attorney David Ward are prosecuting the case..

Sarad is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Kimberly J. Mueller on November 19, 2014. Sarad faces a maximum statutory penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.

Elk Grove Mother With Outstanding Arrest Warrants Suspected of DUI With Child in Car

An Elk Grove mother was arrested yesterday morning on suspicion of drunk driving and for outstanding arrest warrants. 

According to Elk Grove Police, 27-year old Jessica Huntoon was stopped for a vehicle code violation near Elk Grove Boulevard and Highway 99. Upon contact, Huntoon, who had her 20-month old child in the car, allegedly displayed objective signs of impairment. A record checked revealed Huntoon has outstanding arrest warrants from Solano County. 

Huntoon was arrested and booked into the county jail where she remains in custody on $90,000 on DUI, child endangerment charges and for violating terms of her probation. The child was turned over to a relative. 

Three Suspects Arrested For Elk Grove Shoplifting

Elk Grove Police made three shoplifting arrests at three local retailers on Friday and Sunday.

On Friday morning, 19-year old Ashlee Barnes of Modesto was detained by store loss prevention employees after she was reportedly observed shoplifting. A records check by Elk Grove Police also revealed Barnes had an outstanding  arrest warrants. She was booked into the county jail where she remains in custody on $21,000 bail. 

Arrested on Friday afternoon at the nearby Walmart on Bruceville Road was 50-year old Joanie Stinson of Sacramento. Stinson allegedly fled on foot but was apprehended by Elk Grove Police officers.

On Sunday 19-year old Libya Umbashi of Sacramento was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting at the Kohls on Bruceville Road.
