Christmas Eve Shoplifting Lands Elk Grove Woman in Jail

A Christmas Eve alleged shoplifting trip earned an Elk Grove women a visit to the county jail.


According to Elk Grove Police, 49-year old Mary Keithley was observed shoplifting at the Elk Grove Blvd. Wal Mart. After being detained by store employees, Keithley was arrested and taken to the county jail where she was booked on shoplifting and petty theft on more than three occasions charges.

Elk Grove Police Smell Pot, Arrest Suspect For Stolen Handgun, Marijuana Distribution

A Sacramento man was arrested Friday afternoon after he was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun and marijuana for distribution.


According to Elk Grove Police, 26-year old Rhyan Thomas was stopped for a vehicle code infraction on the 8200 block of Laguna Blvd. Upon contact, officers smelled marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

After detaining Thomas, a vehicle search led to the discovery of a loaded stolen handgun and marijuana. The suspect was arrested and taken to the county jail where he remains in custody on $50,000 bail with charges including possession of a stolen gun and sale and distribution of marijuana.

EGPD Yet Again Arrests Walmart Shoplifters

Elk Grove Police yet again arrested shoplifters at a local Walmart.


According to police records, Elk Grove residents 38-year old Robert Benson and 47-year old Marylou Zamudio were arrested on suspicion of shoplifting at the Bruceville Road Walmart. Both suspects were booked into the county jail and released on bail earlier today.

A Sacramento man suspect of shoplifting Sunday afternoon was also arrested for narcotics possession.


According to Elk Grove Police, 43-year old Ahofolau Ngaue was detained by Walmart store employees after they allegedly observed him shoplift merchandise. Responding officers searched the suspect and reportedly  found him to be in possession of narcotics and paraphernalia.

The suspect was booked into the county jail was then transported him to the main jail where he remains in custody on $5,000 bail.

Ronnie Vang
A man convicted of murder after being released from prison for only four days received a death sentence for his actions today.


District Attorney Jan Scully announced today that a jury returned a death sentence verdict for Ronnie Vang. His cousin and co-defendant, Joson Vang, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on January 10, 2014.

On December 4, 2013, two separate juries convicted Ronnie Vang and Joson Vang for the first degree murder of 44-year-old Keith Fessler. They were both convicted on additional charges of robbery, burglary, arson of the victim’s house and theft of the victim’s car. Ronnie Vang was also convicted of arson of the car and the attempted burglary of another home.

On June 23, 2009, the Vangs broke into Fessler’s South Sacramento home, stole several of his musical instruments, and hogtied Mr. Fessler . Ronnie Vang, who had been released from prison four days earlier, then shot Mr. Fessler twice in the back of the head before they set the house on fire. Ronnie Vang later said he killed Fessler to avoid being identified.

Gannon Gets 15 Years For Assault on Elderly, Disabled Woman

District Attorney Jan Scully announced on Friday that the Honorable Delbert Oros sentenced 22-year-old Joseph Gannon to 15 years in state prison.


On December 5, 2013, Gannon pled to multiple felony charges, including first-degree residential burglary, assault on an elder adult causing great bodily injury, second-degree burglary and two counts of identity theft. Gannon also admitted a prior first-degree residential burglary conviction from 2009, a strike under the Three Strikes Law.

The morning of April 7, 2013, Gannon entered the home of a 68-year-old woman he knew while she slept. During the burglary, the victim woke up, saw Gannon, and ultimately recognized him to be the son of her former friend. Gannon then beat her with his fists and her cane while she laid in bed, causing head trauma, multiple lacerations, and fractures to her cheekbone and jaw. The victim required jaw surgery and suffered other permanent injuries.

Gannon fled the victim’s home with two rifles, her purse, cash, jewelry, and other items. A short time later, he was captured on surveillance video in two Placer County businesses using the victim’s credit card to make purchases.

Deputy District Attorney Caryn Dubke stated, “The defendant targeted someone he knew and thought would sleep through the burglary. This senseless beating robbed the victim of her independence and left her depressed, disfigured, and terrified. Today’s sentence is appropriate for this cowardly and despicable crime against an elderly member of our community.”

Antelope Real Estate Professional Pleads Guilty to Mortgage Fraud

Jun Michael Dirain, 41, of Antelope, pleaded guilty yesterday to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection with a mortgage fraud scheme, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

According to court documents, Delta Homes and Lending Inc., a real estate and mortgage lending company, employed Dirain and other co-defendants in the case. Between October 2004 and May 2007, Dirain, a loan processor, conspired with others to obtain home loans from mortgage lenders based upon loan applications and supporting documents that falsely represented the borrowers’ assets and income, liabilities and debts, employment status, and citizenship status. 

As part of the scheme, Dirain and his co-conspirators provided money to borrowers in order to temporarily inflate the borrowers’ assets and bank account balances until the lenders approved the loans. Then the borrowers returned the money to the defendants. 

The aggregate sales price of the homes involved in the conspiracy was in excess of $10 million. As a result of the defendants’ actions, mortgage lenders and others suffered losses of at least $4 million.
This case is the product of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Lee S. Bickley is prosecuting the case.

Dirain is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge William B. Shubb on April 28, 2014. Dirain faces a maximum statutory penalty of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.

A status conference is scheduled for February 10, 2014, for the remaining defendants, including Moctezuma Tovar, Manuel Herrera, Ruben Rodriguez, and Jaime Mayorga, all licensed real estate agents residing in Sacramento; Sandra Hermosillo, of Woodland, formerly a loan officer; and Christian Parada Renteria, of Sacramento, formerly a loan officer.

Elk Grove Police Arrest Arson Suspect After Traffic Stop

A traffic stop in Elk Grove last night led to the arrest of a suspected arsonist.

According to Elk Grove Police, 31-year old Justin Cameron Eck of Sacramento was stopped for a vehicle code violation near Bradshaw and Calvine roads. A record check revealed Eck had an outstanding warrant.

Eck was arrested and booked into the county jail where he remain in custody ineligible for bail. He will be arraigned tomorrow on 2012 arson charges issued by Sac Metro Fire.

South Sac Gang Members Found Guilty of Attempted Murder, Could Face Life

District Attorney Jan Scully announced that a jury convicted five defendants of four counts of premeditated attempted murder.


The jury also found true that the crimes were committed for the benefit of a criminal street gang and that one of the defendants personally discharged a firearm causing great bodily injury to two separate victims. The five convicted were Danny Do, Conrad Johnson, Lam Luong, Roderick Randall and Jhordan Villanuva.

On January 12, 2012, the defendants were at a shopping center located at the intersection of 65th Str. and 53rd Ave. in Sacramento. The shopping center is a known hangout and territory of the street gangs KZT and Viet Pride.

Several of the defendants noticed a rival gang member buying water inside of one of the businesses. They confronted him and challenged him to fight.When several more rival gang members arrived at the scene,Lam Luong and Conrad Johnson produced fiearms and shot at them, striking one in the headand one in the buttocks.

All five defendants face a possible maximum sentence of life in prison. Sentencing is set for March 20 and 27, 2014 before the Honorable Allen Sumner.

Sacramento Woman Sells Phony Viagra, Gets 18 Months Hard Time

Susan Yvonne Eversoll, 46, of Sacramento, was sentenced this morning by U.S. District Court Judge Troy L. Nunley to 18 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release and a $5,000 fine, for conspiring to traffic in counterfeit goods, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

This case is the product of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Hi-Tech Crimes Task Force. Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Rodriguez is prosecuting the case.

According to court documents, law enforcement received information about “Viagra” and “Cialis” being offered for sale through the Internet on Craigslist. Law enforcement later conducted controlled drug purchases of counterfeit Viagra from co-defendant Rickey Lee Campbell, 60, of Sacramento, who used the alias “Diamond Jim.” Eversoll and Campbell’s residences were searched and more than 6,000 counterfeit tablets resembling Viagra and Cialis in shape, size, and color were found. 

Authorities also recovered computers and electronic devices the conspirators used to sell the counterfeit goods. Campbell has pleaded guilty to the conspiracy and is scheduled to be sentenced on May 8, 2014. He faces up to 10 years in prison for his leadership role in the conspiracy. His sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.

Elk Grove Man Arrested on Suspicion of Child Abuse

An Elk Grove man was arrested Monday afternoon on suspicion of child abuse.
According to Elk Grove Police, 35-year old Just McGowan was contacted on the 2300 block of Barn Swallow Court in regards to allegations of child abuse. The three victims reported that McGowan had hit them on the back of the head with a belt with one of the victims sustaining bruising to his head. 

McGowan admitted to police officers to disciplining the three victims with a belt. The suspect was arrested and taken to the county jail. 

Elk Grove Man One of Eight Arrested In Major Drug Bust

Eight defendants were arrested this week in a wide-ranging drug and gun trafficking investigation, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced. A federal grand jury returned the indictments on March 13, 2014, charging the defendants with various drug and gun trafficking offenses. The indictments were unsealed following the arrests of each defendant.

These cases are the product of a long-term investigation by the FBI Safe Streets Task Force and ATF, along with officers from the Sacramento Police Department, California Highway Patrol, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation-Department of Parole and Special Service Unit, and the California Gang Intelligence Initiative.
“We are thankful for continued, active collaboration with our state and local law enforcement task force partners who share our commitment dismantling criminal networks that pose a serious threat to the communities we serve,” said Special Agent in Charge Monica M. Miller of the Sacramento Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. “Disruption of illegal drug and weapons trafficking is essential to ensure the safety and vitality of our neighborhoods.”
  • Andre Nicholas Amaya, 33, of Sacramento, was charged with three counts of distribution of methamphetamine in Sacramento County. He was arraigned on March 20, 2014, the same day as his arrest. His next court date is set for April 17, 2014. (docket # 2:14-cr-72 MCE)
  • Joseph Darosa, 21, of Elk Grove, is charged with five counts of distribution of methamphetamine in Sacramento County. He was arraigned after his arrest today. His next court date is May 6, 2014. (docket # 2:14-cr-71 JAM)
  • Ruben Luis Vega, 27, of North Highlands, is charged with two counts of distributing methamphetamine in Sacramento County. He was arrested on March 19, 2014, and arraigned the next day. His next court date is April 16, 2014. (docket # 2:14-cr-68 KJM)
  • Antonio Reyna, 33, of Sacramento is charged with being a felon in possession of a Ruger .223-caliber rifle. Reyna was arrested on March 19, 2014 and arraigned the next day. His next court date is April 15, 2014. (docket # 2:14-cr-0LKK)
  • John Greer, 31, of Carmichael, and Julius White, 32, of Sacramento, are charged with unlawfully transferring a Winchester sawed-off shotgun. They were arraigned and their next court date is April 18, 2014. (docket # 2:14-cr-073 GEB)
  • Donald Brown, 23, of Sacramento, is charged with two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm: .22-caliber semi-automatic pistol and a Norinco rifle (docket # 2:14-cr-074 MCE)
  • Benjamin Martinez, 30, of Sacramento, was arrested today on a criminal complaint, charging him with distribution of methamphetamine. He made an initial appearance before Magistrate Judge Dale A. Drozd. His next court date is April 3, 2014. (docket # 2:14-mj-063 DAD)
Five of the indictments were part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force. The OCDETF program was established in 1982 to conduct comprehensive, multilevel attacks on major drug trafficking and money laundering organizations. The principal mission of the OCDETF program is to identify, disrupt, and dismantle the most serious drug trafficking and money laundering organizations and those primarily responsible for the nation’s drug supply.
All defendants are in custody. At arraignment, the defendants entered pleas of not guilty. If convicted, the defendants face sentences from five years to life in prison.

Acampo Man Indicted on Charges of Attempting to Support to Terrorist Organization

A federal grand jury returned a one-count indictment today charging Nicholas Michael Teausant, 20, of Acampo, with attempting to provide material support or resources to a foreign terrorist organization, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.



According to court documents, Teausant traveled to the Canadian border with the intent of continuing to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, a foreign terrorist organization more widely known as al Qaeda in Iraq.

This case was the product of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Modesto Police Department and San Joaquin Sheriff’s Office, who are members of the Modesto/Stockton Joint Terrorism Task Force, with significant assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Assistant United States Attorneys Jean M. Hobler and Jason S. Hitt are prosecuting the case in conjunction with Trial Attorney Andrew Sigler of the National Security Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Teausant was charged by complaint with one count of attempting to provide material support or resources to a terrorist organization on March 17, 2014. He is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals pending transportation to the Eastern District of California from the Western District of Washington, where he was arrested, to face the charges now brought by indictment. The date of his arrival in the Eastern District of California is not yet set.

The charges are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. If convicted, Teausant faces a maximum statutory penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Any sentence, however, would be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.

Two Elk Grove Teens Arrested on Suspicion of Burglary

Two Elk Grove teenagers were arrested early last night on suspicion of a residential burglary.

According to Elk Grove Police, officers were dispatched to the 9400 block of Bowmont Way regarding an in-progress residential burglary. The caller indicated that the suspects had entered the backyard and removed the screen from the callers window.

When the suspects heard the caller, they both fled on foot. Officers located the 15 and 16-year old males who matched the description provided, a short distance away from the original scene. Both suspects were detained without incident.


A consent search of the 16-year old suspect’s backpack led to the discovery of burglary tools. Both suspects were taken into custody then transported to juvenile hall. 

Elk Grove Police Arrest Wanted Suspect After Short Vehicle, Foot Pursuit

A Sacramento man was arrested early Friday afternoon after he led police on a short vehicle and foot pursuit.

According to Elk Grove Police, 43-year old Donald Libed was operating a car with an expired registration. When the officer attempted to conduct a vehicle stop, the suspect did not yield.

Libed allegedly did not stop and led the police car on a short pursuit. The suspect then pulled the car into a residential driveway and attempted to flee on foot to the interior of the residence.

The suspect came out of the residence and was arrested. A record search found Libed had three outstanding warrants for his arrest.


Libed was taken to the county jail where he remains in custody on $57,500 bail. 

Man Robbed at Gunpoint, Car Stolen in Elk Grove Robbery

A man was robbed of his car at gunpoint early Monday morning in Elk Grove.

According to police reports, the 20-year old victim was approached by three unknown suspects in a parking lot on the 9500 block of Emerald Park Drive. Two of the suspect were armed with handguns and demanded victim's car keys, which was a car that belonged to his friend. 

After getting the keys, the three suspects fled in the vehicle that was described as a 2006 BMW 325 license plate 5TIZ865. The three suspects were all wearing black sweatshirts with the hoods pulled tight around their faces. 

Responding officers were unable to locate the vehicle and victim was  was not injured. 

Elk Grove Woman Arrested on Embezzlement Charges

An Elk Grove woman was arrested last night on charges that she had embezzled her employer. 

According to Elk Grove Police, loss prevention personnel at the target Store on Elk Grove Boulevard detained 34-year old Parjeet Kuar. The suspect was detained on suspicion of embezzlement, burglar and conspiracy.

Elk Grove Police arrested Kuar who was taken to the county jail and has been released on bail.  


Suspected Walmart Shoplifter Busted For Dope

A suspected shoplifter got more than they likely expected when they were arrested Sunday night for shoplifting.


According to Elk Grove Police, 21-year old Jessup Ray Chairez of Sacramento was detained by loss prevention personnel at the Elk Grove Boulevard Walmart on suspicion of shoplifting, When police officers arrived, a search of the suspect led to the discovery of narcotics.

Chairez was arrested and taken to the county jail and is ineligible for bail.


Wanted Teen Arrested After Stealing Tip Jar at Elk Grove Starbucks

An Elk Grove teenager who tried to grab-and-go with a tip jar at an Elk Grove Starbucks was arrested yesterday morning.

According to Elk Grove Police, the 15-year old male entered the Starbucks on the 5000 block of Laguna Boulevard, picked-up the tip jar, and fled the store. Responding officers located and detained the juvenile a short distance away. 

The suspect was was positively identified as being responsible for the theft. A records check revealed he also had an active warrant. 

The suspect was taken into custody then transported to juvenile hall.

Elk Grove Parolee in Custody Following Suspected Domestic Violence Incident

An Elk Grove parolee is being held in custody following a suspected domestic violence incident.


According to Elk Grove Police, 35-year old Habiballah Sykes was involved in a verbal argument with his victim early Tuesday morning that escalated to a physical confrontation. During the altercation, Sykes allegedly slapped and threw the victim to the ground resulting in visible injuries.

Following the incident, Sykes fled the scene and was located a short distance away by responding officers who arrested him and took him to the county jail. 

The bail has been set at $575,000, but since Sykes violated terms of his parole, he is ineligible for release
